This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The David A. Ellis Elementary School is located in the heart of Roxbury and serves a total of 450 Boston Public School students from kindergarten through 6th grade. Our students are bright, lively, talented and curious. Ninety-eight percent of Ellis School students are Black, Hispanic or biracial. Ninety-seven percent of our students are from “high-needs” families, indicating that they are affected by significant levels of poverty and trauma. The hard-working Ellis School staff members strive daily to meet our students’ academic, social, emotional and physical needs but we need help from our community members to effectively do so.

The Ellis is the home of the Success Bound Academy (SBA), a program for students with special needs.

The SBA students have a designation of Emotional Impairment which is typically a result of childhood trauma. SBA students have even greater needs than our general education students. These students receive counseling, weekly community meetings and an array of other therapeutic resources.

The material will be donated to the students in the SBA program to provide them with a safe space to share their feelings, de-escalate and regulate their emotions and motivate them to improve their academic progress and behavior management through our incentive program.
