Let's Meet Them Where They Are At: Technology for Success
My students need 2 iPads with cases to help meet them where they are academically. With students on so many different levels; technology access is crucial to closing the learning gap.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our classroom has students of varying abilities(from learning the alphabet to a 6th grade reading level). A typical day entails teaching the alphabet on the side, reviewing and reteaching foundational 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade skills while covering 4th grade content at the same time. What a challenge!
Our school is a Title 1 school which means that at least 40% of the students come from low income families.
Our students come from different walks of life and many come to the school as first generation immigrants. Our school serves an extraordinary amount of special needs students as well as English Language Learners, we have made it our mission to provide an equitable education to a population of students that is often under served. However, it is a challenge to meet these students where they are at academically without the proper resources. Our students walk into their classroom often excited to learn and for many of them, this classroom and school are a safe haven from all the challenges they face. They come in so eager to learn English and/or to improve and progress on all their prior learning; but it is challenging to meet them at their academic levels (reading at K, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade levels) while teaching them rigorous 4th grade content. There is a learning gap.
My Project
Our hope is to close the learning gap with tablets in our classroom. The computers in class are not working properly and are not repairable because of age. With the 2 requested iPads, we can have our students use Apps that can make a difference in their learning. For our students learning the alphabet, we can have them on apps like "Alphabet Projector" and "ABS Magic Phonics" that all help with letter recognition and pronunciation. Our struggling readers can work on the "Read It" app, where higher level text can be read to them. As each word is read, it is highlighted; great for word recognition! We can also record our students while they are reading out loud so they can hear those fluency mistakes that early readers often make and use those recordings to show progress in their reading. We can also use the tablets to video our lessons so that students that need extra modeling and reinforcement can get it easily. The possibilities are endless with reliable technology in our classroom!
Your donation will improve our classroom in immeasurable ways.
It will helps us improve our students skills exponentially because we will be able to provide them with learning and practice at their academic level right now; they will experience moments of true success and progress. These tablets will help provide some of the catch up that they need to access the rigorous content that we teach. They will also help us in achieving the promise of an equitable education they so richly deserve.
