My Project
A fingertip oximeter will greatly improve learning among students, especially those in healthcare, biology, or any other field related to human physiology. Students will be able to interact with actual readings of oxygen saturation levels and heart rate, which are vital indicators of an individual's health. This hands-on experience will allow students to understand the relationship between pulse rate, oxygen, and overall well-being, so concepts are more tangible. Furthermore, learning to utilize medical equipment will promote responsibility and form professional competencies that will prove useful in subsequent careers or further education.
The objective of this project is to give students hands-on exposure to health monitoring equipment and foster independent learning.
By adding the fingertip pulse oximeter to the curriculum, not only will students be taught to operate the technology but also how to think critically through reading data and determining its meaning in varying states of health. The intention is to provide students with a better understanding of how the body works and enhance their ability to conduct simple health screenings, leading the way to healthcare or health-related careers. It will also promote cooperation and teamwork since students exchange results and findings with each other.
I have a multiskilled, curious class of students with varied individual experiences and lifestyles that they bring into the classroom with them. They are eager to learn the physiology behind bodily processes and devices used in tracking their health. They are largely from underrepresented groups within the STEM fields, and this project provides a means to engage them in experiential, hands-on learning connecting theory with reality. The fingertip pulse oximeter allows them to feel technology in a very real sense, enhancing their scientific confidence and encouraging them to pursue further studies.
