Help me give my students 8 Makey Makey Classic kits to explore the creative process and engineering with hands-on technology, and 40 document holders to improve typing effeciency for each monitor in my lab.

My Students

My students range in grade level from Kindergarten through 6th grade and come to my computer class each week as a part of their Specialties classes. They are innovative, determined, and creative and are learning to use principles of computer science and foundational skills to leave their mark as good digital citizens.

As 21st Century learners, in a school located near the base of the "Silicon Slopes," these students are facing a future where technology plays a huge part, and are eager to learn and excited for the possibilities that technology brings to them.

Having spent the last 2 years juggling a balance of in-person, online, and at-home learning, my students have become aware of how important it is to be proficient in foundational computer skills and the basics of computer science.

These students are willing to set goals and track progress as we find a variety of ways to focus on, practice, and improve these foundational skills.

My Project

Through the shift in learning between online and the classroom, in light of COVID-19, my students have had to develop new skills to accomplish their tasks. Having a class lab set of document holders for each computer will help students to accomplish their goals of being more proficient in typing because they can easily go back and forth from reading a text to typing it. This will align with at least 3 of the objectives in our Foundational Skills technology standards.

Using Makey Makey STEM kits will bring engineering and coding concepts to life in exciting new ways.

I have heard many students suggest that the hardest part about having to shift their focus to online learning was that there was so much time in front of a computer and not as much hands-on anymore. Using these Makey Makey kits, students will be able to create and code using physical objects within their reach. Having 8 of these kits will directly influence Creativity, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration as students work together to problem-solve and create!
