Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a Dual Immersion first grade class at a Title I School in South Los Angeles that focuses in Science, Math and Technology and we have a very limited music program my students do not have access to.

Currently with the states budget cuts we have NO money for purchases and in recent history there has been very little money put aside for art and music. I always play classical and world music for my students and I am always amazed at how quickly they learn to appreciate and enjoy different classes of music. Unfortunately they have very little exposure to fine art and orchestral music and even fewer opportunities to discuss and analyze it.

These posters and this CD will provide our class with the support materials needed to give students visuals to go along with the sounds. It would be wonderful if they could see and hear the actual instruments, but until we can afford something that grand these diagrams can help them get a better understanding of the form and function of each instrument and the CD can help them train their ear to distinguish and identify each one.

Through your contribution to this project you will be opening doors of thought, creativity and possibly a future career that might never have contemplated due to a lack of exposure and encouragement. Using these materials my students will gain the vocabulary necessary to discuss and critique music in a comprehensive way which will help build their identities as learners, artists, and music lovers. It is often though activities and lessons such as these that students learn to love debate and begin to see themselves as an intellectual with a valid opinion.
