Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.
I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students are on free or reduced lunch.
Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.
My Project
Two of the main standards in fifth grade Social Studies are the Age of Exploration and the American Revolution. While we have a section in the text book and access to videos about these subjects, enriching activities are often overlooked when it comes to Social Studies.
Social Studies is an excellent gateway for students to get comfortable with informational, non-fiction text.
From early on in education we promote literature but what often takes a back seat is informational text. Social Studies is an exciting subject that can hook students on the joys of reading informational text.
These two boxes will help my students greatly by giving them activities they can work on as a center to not only learn about the American Revolution and the Age of Exploration, but to also allow them to use informational text in a meaningful way. They will have access to various sources to help them learn their Social Studies content. What's even better is that these activity boxes incorporate writing, thus giving us more bang for the buck. It's essential that children see that writing is involved in every subject, every day.
