This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Most students at my school are reading well below grade level. This makes it challenging for them to access material in all their classes, as even math and science require that they are able to read and understand problems and read over their notes. As our 8th graders prepare to transition to high school, we are particular anxious that they improve their fluency and comprehension. Three times a week, three students come into my classroom for a period of reading intervention, where they are meant to improve and practice decoding skills to become more fluent readers. I am hoping that if they have access to engaging, culturally relevant texts that are at their level, my students will begin to enjoy reading for reading's sake.
