I am a fourth grade teacher at P.S. 169 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, N.Y. Our school is a Title 1 school, where all the students receive free lunch, and come from low income families. The student population consists of many English Language Learners and many of them are reading below grade level. One of my goals this year is to create a highly motivated learning environment where I can help my students master what it takes to become effective readers. Throughout the school year my students will be working on their reading strategies during Reader's Workshop. However, from my experience I feel that the students are looking for an escape from the books. The reading comprehension games inspire and motivate the students during the learning process. These action packed games give the students a fun-filled way to develop comprehension skills. At the same time it targets standards in the following areas: recalling facts and details, understanding and analyzing text, vocabulary development, critical thinking and drawing conclusions. Lakeshore Learning's Reading Comprehension Games Library for grades 1-3 (to be used for the English Language Learners and students who are reading below grade level) and Reading Games Library for grades 4-6 consists of six different games each set. Such as: Adventure Camp, Pirate Island, Star Power Premiere, Skate Park Rally, Extra Extra! and Rooky Carnival (grades 1-3) Grades 4-6 include games such as: Hazard Mountain, Main Street Shopping, Capture The Flag, Outlast, Quest For Jewels, Wipeout. The Reading Comprehension Games Library for grades 1-3 and grades 4-6 supports the Balanced Literacy Program and would help all my students achieve success.
