Help me give my students library books that are inclusive and reflect their diverse languages, backgrounds, and experiences.

My Students

I am the school librarian at a public pre-K program in Urbana, IL. We are fortunate to have a group of students who are ethnically, racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse. We are a blended Special Education and Preschool for All program and have many students with differing abilities. Our school is inclusive and welcoming to all, and we are so very fortunate to be surrounded by these bright and curious learners.

Library time is a highlight for so many of our preschoolers.

We read stories, sing songs, and play games together. It's exciting for our students to break out of their normal classroom routines for a special library time each week. Checking out books to bring home and share with their families is a real treat for our preschoolers. Many have never been to a public library before, and this is their first opportunity to borrow books. They are thrilled to take ownership and choose their own texts. Sharing stories at school and with their families helps them to become enthusiastic readers and learners.

My Project

Our school library is a welcoming and inclusive place. We celebrate our diversity through stories, songs, and play. I strive to ensure that all students feel represented and have their voices heard when they are at the library.

Unfortunately, many of the books in our library do not reflect the diversity of our students.

The books we have available for our students to check out lack characters, settings, and topics that look like them or reflect their experiences. Their cultures, their homes, and their languages are missing. We need more inclusive stories that truly reflect the diversity of our students.

Once this project is funded, our students will have the opportunity to check out library books that are representative of them, their families, and their experiences. They'll be able to share these stories with their family members. I want our school library to be inclusive both inside the school building and in the materials we send home for our students to share with their families.
