Our school library is a welcoming and inclusive place. We celebrate our diversity through stories, songs, and play. I strive to ensure that all students feel represented and have their voices heard when they are at the library. Unfortunately, many of the books in our library do not reflect the diversity of our students. The books we have available for our students to check out lack characters, settings, and topics that look like them or reflect their experiences. Their cultures, their homes, and their languages are missing. We need more inclusive stories that truly reflect the diversity of our students. Once this project is funded, our students will have the opportunity to check out library books that are representative of them, their families, and their experiences. They'll be able to share these stories with their family members. I want our school library to be inclusive both inside the school building and in the materials we send home for our students to share with their families.
