This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school students who have been diagnosed with a variety of moderate to severe disabilities, and yet they all thrive to put forth their best selves every day. I teach in Fairfield California. Fairfield is a city that has high gang activity and violence, and while that does effect a small group of students on campus, it does not define who we are as a whole. We are a No Excuses University School and thrive to teach our students that they too can achieve greatness both during their high school career and beyond! First high school then college and career! All of our students know that there is a journey waiting for them after graduation, and it's up to them to choose the path they take to get to where they want to go.

My Project

This year we had one teacher and an idea and he invited a few students to join him in learning the Ukulele on their lunch break, and within a matter of months he had a classroom full of students and staff eager to learn about these little musical instruments.

The ukulele club has not only brought students together who wouldn't normally hang out in the same room, but has also welcomed teachers and ADMINISTRATORS to join the fun!

This club promotes music as well as unity, learning as well as togetherness, and best of all it is growing like wild fire. It is breaking down the barriers between students and staff, and for that 30 minutes once a week they are all just people gathering to share their love of music!

The one challenge that this club is facing is the lack of ukulele's available to students who can not afford to purchase their own. Currently the group passes around ukulele's and they take turns making music. They do not get to take them home to practice, nor do they get to show their friends and families what they are learning about in school. Our campus lacks a variety of elective classes on campus, and our clubs pick up the slack by providing direct instruction in an activity of interest that students would typically get from an elective class. The students are excited about this club and want it to succeed, but the club needs instruments that the students can check out and be responsible for. You can help us make this happen!
