My Students

My students live in an impoverished neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Despite the fact that we are a Title I school and approximately 95% of our students qualify for free lunch, my fantastic fifth graders are hard- working and are eager to learn. This school year we are departmentalizing the 5th grade for the very first time and we lack the learning tools to make our math exploration not only minds-on... but also hands-on.

Last school year, as fourth graders they worked diligently to overcome the obstacles of struggling with number sense and number fluency.

Despite those deficiencies, they persevered and most of them performed well on the state math exam. My students are now curious and excited about their growth as mathematicians. You can play a vital role in transforming our mundane classroom into a "Math Laboratory" to help my students explore the wonderful world of mathematics.

My Project

My goal this school year is to give my fifth graders an opportunity to explore math interactively. I need your help to secure the tools my students need to build mastery in Math. We need class sets of manipulatives to make our math investigations come alive as we explore, discover and learn about Mathematics.

The instructional focus at our school is Student Engagement, therefore, the primary focus of my project is to incorporate the use of manipulatives in order to provide rich, hands-on experiences during math investigations..

These interactive tools will enable my students to apply the concepts being taught and will result in them gaining a deeper understanding of mathematics and will also help them to make real life connections to the math. Additionally, the incorporation of manipulatives during math workshop will be in compliance with Common Core Standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice, will help build student motivation and will also add interest and rigor to each lesson.

I sincerely believe that practice does not only make perfect...practice makes permanent, therefore all students must be given lots of opportunities to practice and apply what's being taught so that it becomes embedded in their minds and they can make real sense of the mathematical skills and procedures.

It is my expectation that with the incorporation of these interactive learning aids, my students will not only enjoy learning math, but they will also be performing at / or above grade level by the end of the school year. Please help me make it happen!!
