Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In the 2023-24 school year, I will be teaching a group of about 60 Black & Brown middle school students with a ton of energy, enthusiasm, and personality. My incoming 8th graders, who were in 4th and 5th grade during Covid and many of whom have learning disabilities, still struggle with multiplication and division, but are always excited and proud when they are able to persevere to the right answer--especially if they're doing it as part of a Kahoot. Last year, when I taught them as 7th graders, I saw how much they succeeded when they had access multiplication tables and calculators, so that skill gaps wouldn't hold them back from accessing grade level material. I am hoping that having access to colorful expo erase markers, dry-erase number lines, and easy-to-access calculator storage will help them to thrive.

My classroom also needs a facelift.

I want my kids, who already have anxiety around math, to learn in a warm and comforting environment, with diffuse lighting, soft carpeting, and plants that they will take responsibility for keeping alive. I also hope to fill my classroom with grade-level reading material, so that students can get in the habit of reading rather than scrolling when they finish work or testing ahead of schedule. And, most importantly, I want my kids to know that if they need a bite to eat in the hours between breakfast and lunch, which they often do, they have a place to go.

Going into my second year teaching in Boston Public Schools, I want to create an environment where my students will feel deeply supported and cared for, so and where they will be able to learn math without the distraction of hunger, and without feeling ashamed of the things they don't yet know how to do.
