My students need magnetic letters, alphabet stamps, magnetic word builder activities and baskets to store them all to accommodate different academic levels.
Our school provides a rigorous college preparatory education that equips and empowers students for success in college and in life. We welcome all students including those living with emotional, physical, or other structural disadvantaging factors such as gender, race, or poverty. We are in the third year of our elementary addition to our middle and high schools.
Our school seeks to foster hope and confidence in all students, so we offer the Orton-Gillingham Approach to improving reading skills to all our elementary students.
Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory approach to reading encompassing phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary building, fluency, and comprehension skills. The population of our inclusive classrooms are 60% general education and 40% students with disabilities.
Orton-Gillingham was originally developed to help students suffering with dyslexia. It has been proven to help all students especially language learners and those with disabilities. It is important to note, that statistics show that 10% of the population has some form of dyslexia, but when dealing with students with disabilities that percentage goes up to 85%!
My Project
Most of my students start Third grade below reading level. To mitigate this circumstance, Lavelle Preparatory Charter School offers Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach to reading. I teach five Third grade inclusive classes. After the students complete the basic drills and I teach the new skills of the day, the class breaks out into groups. The groups rotate through different activities each of the three periods that they receive Orton-Gillingham instruction.
The Indoor/Outdoor Magnetic Activity Center will permit me to move these materials easily from class to class, perhaps even outside as a special treat!
The Classroom Magnetic Kits, Build-A-Word, Magnetic Blend Words and Sight Word Magnets will help me to differentiate for each group according to the students' abilities. Students will work with similar materials that are academically appropriate to current academic abilities and allows easy transition to the growth activities. The students will enjoy using the magnetic letters and stamps to create words and sentences in a unique and colorful way!
Many students are not only visual learners but kinesthetic and spatial learners as well. These materials give them a chance to get up and use the Indoor/Outdoor Magnetic Activity Center. The students can create colorful sentences, paragraphs or even personal letters using Clear View Alphabet Stamps. The children enjoy working together and these supports allow me to make stations for groups to work together and give each other feedback!
