At the start of the new school year I will teach 120 middle schoolers (that’s 7th and 8th graders, in my building) who have chosen to take "technology" as an elective. My experience with them has taught me that they think they are "too cool for school" and usually have to be coerced into learning. Once their interest is piqued, they never cease to amaze me with their ability to learn. They are digital natives and can usually teach me a thing or two.
My students want their education to be relevant and mirror real-life experiences.
I want to give them the opportunity to shine. Together, we are a most excellent team.
My Project
I believe teachers have an obligation to help students make connections to real life applications of lessons taught in the classroom. In my Science & Technology Integration class, my students will be learning about 3D printing. I plan to have them develop their own prosthetic hands. To do this, they will need to examine the way a hand moves and the joints found in each finger.
It is my hope that students will see how important learning 3D design skills can be.
First we will use the toy robot hands to pick up small objects. Then we'll put together the robotic hand kits. This will help us understand how we may be assemble our models. We'll work through the design process, in teams, to complete our own version of hands on our 3D printer. Lastly we'll use the motorized robotic hand to help us understand how to put our designs into motion.
