Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range from seventh to eighth grade and our school is about forty-six percent socioeconomically disadvantaged. This means that about half of our students are on a free or reduced-cost lunch program.
Our school and community faced something that we never thought we would with devastating fires.
One year ago, much of our city of Santa Rosa was destroyed by fires. It impacted our students, our families, our entire city and surrounding communities. We had many students and staff lose their homes due to the fires. Many students and staff were evacuated, some for two weeks or longer. Our school and all schools in our district were closed for three weeks. So many have lost so much. Our students and staff donated to help out in the relief efforts. Our students and staff have been through a lot this past year but together, we will rise. “The love in the air is thicker than the smoke” is still a phrase that can be heard in the hallways.
My Project
My students' desks are starting to feel the wear and tear. They were old when I inherited them, and I've been teaching here at Slater for 21 years now. My current desks have names carved into them from kids who are probably parents themselves now.
My high school English teacher didn't have desks; she had tables and chairs, and she has inspired me so much that I want to pay it forward.
Dr. Marilyn Whirry thought that students should be able to work together sometimes, and create groups that facilitate their learning, and I agree. These tables are just the way to go: they can be used individually by two students, or they can be brought together so that students can work in a group. Thank you so very much for considering this project...my present and future students thank you!
