My Students

Can you imagine teaching vocabulary skills/dictionary skills with a group of 26 students and two dictionaries? This is a challenging task for my group of second graders.

My students are very curious and very eager to learn.

We are part of the Waukee School District, which is a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa. With so many people facing economic crises, it is impossible to ask parents to provide dictionaries for their children and our school does not have the money to provide these resources. We only have 2 dictionaries in our classroom and they are very basic dictionaries. Students usually can not find the challenging words they need when they try to look up the words they need.

My Project

At our school, one component of our Daily 5/CAFE literacy time is to focus on vocabulary. While reading aloud, we discuss meanings of new words, synonyms and antonyms for these words, and use the new words in sentences. Dictionaries would be very beneficial to have in our classrooms as a resource to look up the new words and discuss what they mean. Using a dictionary is also a life skill that students will use as they become adults. Searching for information in a dictionary is something that students have to practice themselves. Teachers need to model this skill and students need to have a dictionary to practice. This is very challenging to model and have students practice when we only have two dictionaries in the classroom. If there were more dictionaries in our classroom, students would be able to have the dictionary in their hands and experience looking up new words on their own.

My students need classroom dictionaries so they can study dictionary/vocabulary skills as these skills are a benchmark and objective for our 2nd grade curriculum.

My students would love the opportunity to have such a great resource on our shelf in our classroom. It will be a great tool to help differentiate instruction and expand vocabulary. Thank you for your willingness to help out our classroom. Your donation is greatly appreciated!
