My Students
My class is full of ready-to-learn middle school students who are looking to grow academically and in their organizational skills. They have multiple subjects in my room and travel to other classrooms throughout the day. In my school, over 92% of students are classified as low income, 35% are English Language Learners (ELL) and 25% receive Special Education services. My students are motivated to succeed and love having donorschoose.org projects, especially those that they lead, enhance their learning in very meaningful ways.

As students settle into small groups with their literature circle peers and listen to a novel, they will learn that there is a bigger world outside their city neighborhood.
My middle schools students are significantly below grade level in reading and many are also ELLs. Their learning styles are varied, and almost everyone in my class is an auditory learner who greatly benefits from hearing stories read aloud to them. This year, their literature circles include an author study on Christopher Paul Curtis, stories about preteens during the Holocaust, tales of students overcoming the odds, and exciting science fiction and fantasy adventures. Being exposed to different genres of books gives my classroom of readers opportunities to see the world through new eyes. By listening to texts, they can better comprehend the stories to learn about the lessons, themes and great ideas.
