I need to attend a purposeful training with Jennifer Serravallo to focus on reading and writing strategies as we begin to implement new literacy curriculum.

My Students

Our elementary school is a growing, dynamic neighborhood school of about 410 students in Oregon. It is a Title I school and has a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds - socioeconomically, racially, and culturally. It seeks to provide a rich, engaging curriculum while encouraging positive behavior. It celebrates abilities and believes in the possibilities of students. My classroom will be an extension of these ideals and goals...a place to be brave, be kind, celebrate mistakes, and work hard.

My Project

In the year to come, our school district will be adopting and implementing new Language Arts curriculum. Having served on the adoption committee, I am thrilled that we chose a curriculum from the non-profit, Center for the Collaborative Classroom. I already had the joy of seeing the students engage in authentic writing tasks and projects and to be transfixed with great children's literature.

I am seeking to attend Jennifer Serravallo's training this fall called "Strategies and Structures for Teaching Reading and Writing", based on her practical, 5-star rated, books by the same name.

In the workshop, we will "understand how to find goals for...readers and writers and how to support them over time as they work toward those goals." Half of the day will be spent on reading (print work, fluency, comprehension and writing and talking about reading) while the afternoon will explore a "10 goal hierarchy of writing goals".

The chance to learn about teaching structures for differentiating instruction is crucial and will "marry" with our new curriculum which we will roll out this fall. Thank you for considering supporting my attendance of this conference and the connected learning and deepening of strategies and skills to be had.
