This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are awesome! They are creative and excited about learning. I am privileged to teach music in a rural public school serving 900 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through fourth, including a special group of children facing severe physical and mental disabilities.
In this school of high poverty, I strive daily to provide an equitable music experience to all students.
This experience includes exposing students to new instruments, musical cultures, music history, and music as an expression of self. Because many of my students lack the funding or physical ability to travel to unique musical settings, I strive to bring the creative musical world into my classroom.
My Project
I love teaching my students about music and I also like to make this experience fun for them. One way that I do that is to adapt certain games to contain musical elements so that as the students play them, they are learning about music. I will use the following games; twister, jenga and Ants in Your Pants and adapt them to become musical games.
Students will practice their newly acquired rhythm skills and they practice clapping music rhythms as they play these games.
I will also use the music bingo games and the Classroom Management in the Digital Age: Effective Practices for Technology-Rich Learning Spaces ideas to help students learn even more about music.
