This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach kindergarten in a low-income school in the Bronx. My students are young but have already encountered many struggles in their short lives. Many live in shelters and almost all receive free lunch.

They are very sweet children who work really hard.

75% of the students in my school are second language learners and they take on responsibilities in their families that most children could not even imagine. I have 25 students with very different needs and challenges that I am trying to meet every day.

My Project

This is a year filled with challenges for many reasons. Almost all of my kindergarten students are in a school for the first time in their lives. I need more lower leveled books to help both encourage my students to start to read and build their confidence about learning to read. Since so many of my students are just starting I need more lower leveled books. Over the years these books get ruined or just torn because of use. It would be great to have new books they can look through and take home to show their parents that they can read!
