As a librarian in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am aiming to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Our library is the center of learning in our diverse population.
Our students visit the library often, for a variety of reasons, and I want to continue to serve them in all subject areas such as English, math, science, social studies, and robotics.
Our elementary school is a large, urban public school with almost five hundred students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over seventy percent of our students receiving free lunch. The ethnic breakdown of the school is 39% white, 37% Hispanic, 14% black, and 8% Asian.
I am asking for a Microsoft Surface Go so my students can use it to design and create using the Cricut Design Space studio. I am limited on the technology to connect to our existing Cricut machine and computers, therefore the Surface Go will be an important addition to the library MakerSpace Center. In addition, students will be able to use the Surface Go to code and to create Flipgrid videos.
Makerspace centers can also teach and reinforce important STEM skills but in a manner that empowers students by letting them control the pace.
The Surface Go will be an invaluable addition to the STEM program in the library because students will be able to do a variety of activities with the new computer.
