My students need the Alphabet Sounds Teaching Tubs in order to have hands-on materials to practice identifying new sounds and to sort different sounds.
"What is that? Why does it do that? What is that sound?" These are the types of questions I get asked from my students everyday! My students are curious, creative, and full of energy. I teach an Intensive Behavior Prekindergarten class. My students range from 3-4 years old with a wide variety of needs. These needs vary from developmental delay and speech and language impaired. My students have significant behavioral needs which prevents them from attending a typical prekindergarten classroom. They require a very structured and engaging classroom environment to keep them motivated to make "good choices" throughout the day.
As a Title I school, most of our students come from low-income families with very limited access to technology at home.
I have learned over the years that my students make the most gains when they are provided hands on learning opportunities. I hope to be able to continue challenging my students in expanding their view of the world around them by providing these interactive learning opportunities.
My Project
Learning the alphabet is a daily target for my class. My students are learning how to identify a letter, say the letter sound, and write the letter of the week. We use the DIG by The Letter People curriculum in my class. Although it provides many beautiful visuals and posters, the curriculum does not come with many hands-on materials for the students.
My students learn best when they are engaged in hands-on learning.
Using manipulatives provides a multi-sensory approach to learning that a worksheet cannot offer. By using the alphabet tub, my students will be able to visually see what words start with each letter and also provide a tactile experience for them. These materials will be used to introduce our new letter of the week and also be used to review letters we have learned.
