My 12 kind-hearted students and I learn in a small town in Maine. They come into school everyday full of energy and excitement for the day ahead. Some of them face difficult challenges in and out of school, some of them get all of the love and support they need. My students appreciate a well-organized learning environment, full of structure and predictable routines. No matter what situation they come from, they all seem to absolutely love reading and learning!
The way my students get lost in their books is magical!
That is why a lot of my instruction starts with a read aloud and book suggestions to further their learning on a topic. My students are always asking for more independent reading time and cannot wait to see what they will be reading in their groups. I love providing students with new worlds and possibilities through rich narrative texts that spur their imagination. Additionally, I love when a student has a question about something they are curious about and I am able to grab an informational book off the shelf that will satisfy their wonderings while leading them to new ones!
My Project
With this project, you will be helping my students dive deeper into science and social studies topics through pictures books. Picture books are an engaging way for students to access our science and social studies curriculum and generate enthusiasm and excitement around topics.
These books will give all students the background information they need to embark in higher-level thinking, discussions, and collaborative learning opportunities.
Picture books will allow students to build stronger content vocabulary, strengthen their comprehension and learning through illustrations, and address misconceptions. Additionally, these books will allow us to maximize our time because not only will be be learning about science and social studies topics, we will be improving our reading skills, too!
