This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are full of life and curiosity - ready to expand their skills in reading, writing, math, and all that the world has to offer. They thrive off of building relationships, and finding connections to the world around them, and showing what they can do. And as they've shown in the past school year, they are incredibly resilient and able to persevere through any and all challenges. This school year, they continue to face a challenges like no other - from starting the school year virtually, to moving to hybrid learning and entering a completely different school setting.

One thing I've noticed as this school year has gone on is just how aware my students are of what is going on in the world - not only do they know about the virus that caused this pandemic, but they also know about the spread of racism occurring in our world.

My Project

This past school year, it has been more evident than ever that teaching anti-racism, empathy, and inclusivity can never happen too early. Although my students are very aware of the tensions occurring in society and our country, I am hoping that by sharing more diverse books and stories with students they can learn more about the varying perspectives of others as well as see themselves and people they know and love in the stories and books they read about.

Fostering their empathy starts now.

I want my students to be able to see and respect one another for all of our unique and delicate differences, as well as find how similar we all truly can be. I also want to use these stories to teach them about advocacy - how we can stand up for things we feel strongly about, things we believe in, and how they, too, can be allies and activists.
