Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.
I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students are on free or reduced lunch.
Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.
My Project
I don't know if you've ever noticed, but this generation of children are a bouncy group. I don't know about anyone else, but I have a really hard time keeping my students in their seats because they have all this energy. As a matter of fact, the only thing that can really get my students to hunker down and focus is when I get them in front of a computer or on their cell phones.
Why can't we take advantage of our students' energy and love for technology instead of trying to shut it down?
I do a lot of small group lessons and it would be really cool for my students if they were able to have a seat that played into their need to be active. That's where the yoga balls come into play. The kids can bounce and fidget all they want as they come to small group and trade their hard plastic chairs for the fun of a bouncy yoga ball (and all the while they'll be strengthening their core)! Once I've got them into small group, it's time to hand them some technology (the electronic white boards) and get them rocking and rolling through their lessons. I bet that kids will be itching to come to small group rather than loathe it when they see that it can be a release for all their energy while still engaging them with advanced technology.
