My Project

In my STEAM class, my 5th graders are learning about Earth Science. They are learning about the environment, specifically natural resources, sustainability, and pollution. They're also learning about types of activism in social studies. Two types being advocates, and helpers. I have two classes of about 20 students each, and three quarters of them want to organize some kind of clean-up day or challenge for their grade level or grade level clusters.

My students need trash receptacles and liners to make their campus clean-up projects come to life.

One group's idea is to add trash cans to the top and bottom of the two main student buildings on campus so students have a place to throw their trash instead of the ground. Once the campus clean-ups are done, these trash cans will be used for their project in hopes that our school's custodial staff will be willing to empty and change the bags out if the students provide the cans and the liners (at least the first 125).

The magnifying glasses and hand-held microscopes are for students to inspect trash at different stages to see how they breakdown and litter our environment with micro-plastics, or become filthy as they sit waiting for people to clean them up.

The main goal of this environmental PBL is for my students to learn the effects of wasting resources, and how pollution is affecting our environment now and how it will affect their future if something isn't done now, as well as how they are the future and can be the change makers no matter how young they are.
