My students are amazing and thankful for all they receive. My school is located in upper east Tennessee. All of my students receive a free breakfast and over 90% receive a free or reduced lunch. Our school is very small with only 2 teachers per grade level. With that being said we do not receive the most up to date advances in our school.
The gym is the main hub for the school's sports teams (boy basketball, girls basketball, cheer leading, and softball), community, youth club sports, and various other actives.
Our school's sports teams have been very successful in the past few years. Both basketball teams have elected to play up in division to have more challenging competition. Even by playing up in division we have been able to move on to regional finale play. Our gym in used nightly between school sports and youth club play. The school/community has a strong youth club program that helps need the school teams.
My Project
The school's gym is the oldest building in the state of Tennessee that is still used by a public school. It is a wonderful building that has deep roots in the community but with it's age comes it's problems. The gym is used daily by of one of the school's sports teams or one of the many youth club teams. With the age of the gym there is only water fountain in the foyer. This is an issue with the amount of students who use the space.
The school has a water bottle refill station in the building but after hours the alarm is set; so students are not able to use it when they need it for sports.
All of the coaches and even some of the parents have tried to start bringing water in bottles for the players, but it causes such waste. It also cost the players, unnecessarily. This water fountain/water bottle refill station will not only help reduce land filled waste it will also save the school and youth club players money.
