My students need yarn and beads for weaving. The canvases and paint will elevate their art work. Etching tools will be used on the beautiful gold scratchboards.
Children are so creative and smart. Because I have taught Art at this school for 16 years, I want to use this school year to enhance the skills I have taught and provide enriching art materials for the students. Parents constantly tell me how much they value the art work their children produce.
Our little school is a shining example of children at their best.
I have a unique job because I get to teach Art to ALL the children of our school, 382 of them, kindergarten - sixth grade. Our school builds on a neighborhood which celebrates the arts through the community center/art gallery and cultural events woven throughout the immediate area. We are a very diverse group. Our school has dual immersion Spanish classes, special education and general education classes and an opportunity class designed to help struggling students become successful and have a positive school experience. I am proud of the art emphasis surrounding our school and I hope to continue to expose the students in this community to the riches the arts provide.
My Project
Each year, I hope to provide the different grade levels with a special project outside the usual paint/watercolor on construction paper. This year, I would like to do some weaving/beading with my primary students. My second grade students are ready to learn to weave and the special beads would enhance their work. I plan to use the canvases with third grade and incorporate other materials, peacock feathers, into their paintings. With my upper grade students, I would like to focus on etching, Rembrandt, and use the new tools and lavish gold scratchboard to piggyback off the Social Studies curriculum. Fourth grade studies California history, fifth graders learns about US history and sixth grade analyzes ancient civilizations. I think this link between history and art will bring a deeper meaning and understand to their educational experiences.
Art is a consumable subject.
I am always searching for funding sources for my class. The PTA is willing to support the art program but they have other projects to fund as well. Donors Choose has been supportive of my art classes in the past and I feel confident that donors will see that the materials they provide for our school will boost the students art work and create family treasures for years to come.
