Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want my student to start thinking about scientific concepts more critically. I want to introduce students to science demos and interesting scientific items bimonthly. The students will be challenged to figure out what scientific concept is involved.
My students can be very unmotivated and uninterested in the classroom.
I need to jazz up the class with challenges that will get my students interested in actually thinking. I want to present the kids with a scientific puzzle to try and solve. With the Common Core curriculum, we need the students to start using their brains rather than just expecting to get all the answers directly from the teacher.
My Project
I hope to challenge the students twice a month with the different materials I am asking to purchase. The hand boilers, solar bags and the energy sticks will be given to the kids to test and try to figure out how they work and why they work. I want them to figure out the scientific concepts involved. For instance, with the energy sticks the students can figure out about completing a circuit. The solar bags will have the kids discussing how hot air rises. With the hand boilers, we can discuss how the increase in temperature causes a higher air pressure giving the appearance of the liquid boiling. The Fast Physics Kit and the Fizz Pop Boom Kit will be demonstrations that the kids will get to watch and discuss. The Fast Physics Kit will have kids exploring Newton's Laws while the Fizz Pop Boom Kit will have us focusing on propulsion fuels.
I want my students to be curious about how things work.
By giving them a science challenge twice a month, we can get them thinking more critically about what is going on. Why does this work? How does this happen? These are types of questions I want my students to focus on. We could focus on many different scientific concepts throughout the year. The students can also start thinking about how the concepts connect to how everyday things work.
