Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school has one of the last public middle school band programs in the region, but it is growing and strong. When I started teaching music at the high-need school five years ago, there had not been a band there for more than twenty years. Now the music program, an overwhelming success, has more than doubled, even though the overall population of the school has been brought down from an overcrowded 120% over-capacity. My music students, grades 6 through 8, are proud of their instruments and enthusiastic about studying and performing music together. As a band we have had great successes and admiring audiences, and the students have gained confidence and a true sense of accomplishment. The band performs everything from Classical to Jazz including Latin, Pop and World music and the young musicians are eager to perfect their skills, but they are lacking a critical step in the learning process. The students are unable to listen back to their performances, reflect on them, evaluate them, and rejoice in their own hard work. As a musician I know how much hearing the playback of a live show can teach the performers, so in the past, with no a/v resources available at my school, I have recorded the band on my ancient and now-deceased musician’s tape recorder. The students would be captivated by their own performance and write thoughtful and critical reviews, coming up with new insights, feedback and means for improvement. The band’s level would always jump after these intense listening sessions. A handheld digital recorder could breath new life back into this crucial process. With excellent, crystal clear stereo recording, the digital handheld is also small enough to keep in the pocket during parades and outdoor shows and to capture the band’s brilliance at every turn. And because it’s digital, sound files can be posted to the school’s website so students will have continual access to them at any time of the day or night. Student musicians will also have the recorder available to them at school as a powerful personal tool to help them as they prepare festival solos and high school audition pieces. Your help in hearing the playback will inspire them all to higher goals and greater achievements.
