I work with a group of students with intellectual disabilities, including autism, in a middle school setting. Our school is in a small tight-knit community, and many of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the many difficulties they are faced with, my students have the drive to succeed.
These students work hard to overcome obstacles and meet their goals.
I have high expectations for them and push them to achieve at a higher level each day. They rise to the challenge and are always very proud of their accomplishments.
My Project
During our vocational skills class, my students are learning valuable skills that they will carry into their adult lives. We run two small businesses including a lunch cafe and a Christmas ornament shop. When we are finished with our cafe each week, the students help clean up our room, wash the dishes and do the laundry. We are currently in need of new cleaning supplies, including a vacuum, dish towels and a laundry cart.
By learning to clean up after themselves and others, my students are gaining valuable life skills which will help them work toward their independence.
My students love to help out whenever they can, and these new supplies will help them to continue learning those skills.
