Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school hasn't put on a play about 20 years. I'm just the crazy teacher to attempt it, combining performing arts with language lessons, and critical thinking skills.
We are a Title 1, low income school on the brink of being closed. Our focus has to be test scores in order to hold on to funding, at the expense of providing our students well rounded education. Anything fun or creative is put on the back burner, unless I can make it "standards based". Even field trips have been cut.
The kids are difficult to motivate, and have little life experience to draw from. One afternoon a week, 4th and 5th grade kids that need intensive tutoring are pulled into small groups, and I have the chance to teach the arts to the rest of the group: about 70 students! A ready made choir!!! (All 100 will participate one way or another in the production.) For years I have shown "The Music Man" to my class to teach the Elements of Music, and various music styles. I laugh for weeks afterward hearing "Gary, Indiana" and "76 Trombones" being sung by gangster-wanna' be's. Putting on the show would satisfy Visual and Performing Arts standards, and I am adept at coordinating with core curriculum standards, so administration is appeased.
We don't need fancy props or costumes because we have some very creative moms and staff members that seem to make something out of nothing. Just some raw materials to make the sets and simple costumes.
100 boys and girls participating in a once in a lifetime experience would prove how inspiring, desired, and necessary the arts are in our district.
