Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a low income Title I school. Many of my students do not have the resources that they need at home such as books on their reading level. They also do not have books in another language to support and nurture their ability to learn a second language. In order to learn a new language it is necessary to immerse yourself in it. This is possible through books and learning materials.
We are a first grade dual language class.
My students are developing language proficiency in two languages by receiving instruction in English and Spanish. We provide both sets of students with ample exposure to the two languages, allowing them to progress academically in both languages and gain an appreciation of another culture.
Our school is a high needs Title I school in the Bronx. The majority of my students come from low income homes. However, that does not take away their enthusiasm for learning especially in a different language other than English. They feel very special knowing that they will be able to take advantage of opportunities that are available only in other languages.
My Project
As we already know 2020 has turned out to be quite a year. My students have been home since March when NYC schools shut down and began remote learning due to Covid 19. Now as we face a new school year my new first graders will be coming back to a whole new way of learning.
My students will use their own box of crayons to create beautiful pictures this year in first grade.
They will be safe because they will not be sharing them with their friends this new school year. They will also love getting reward stickers because it will let them know they are doing their best work.
Prior to the pandemic my students came from homes where they struggled to get basic school supplies. Now more than ever I know that school supplies such as crayons, tissues, folders, and pencils will be even more difficult to provide because many families have been without work for many months now. Please help my students and my classroom so that we can focus on learning and not have to worry about not having the supplies necessary to have a normal as possible school year.
