Help me give my students the necessary tools for exploring the engineering behind boomilever and glider builds as well as the opportunity to create successful circuit labs at Science Olympiad!
My learners are some of the most motivated young scientists and engineers I have had the privilege to work with. This group is made up of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who consistently think outside the box, and are not at all afraid to try new things, regardless of the outcome. Students are excited to work with peers they normally wouldn't collaborate with in the regular academic setting, which allows them to stretch each other, both academically and socially...it's a win win!
Our school of just under 600 students is located in a rural setting, with 100% of our population qualifying for free and reduced lunches.
That said, these students simply refuse to allow socio-economic challenges to dampen their curiosity or drive. They continue to ask the absolute best of themselves, as well as their peers. Nothing beats seeing a shy, reserved student from the regular classroom come to life when given the opportunity to explore their interests in science.
When I am in the room surrounded by these students, I am in awe of their positivity, their collaborative spirits, their drive, and the sheer limitlessness of their futures. They hold our futures in the palms of their hands!
My Project
Team members will work to widen their topic knowledge, from fossils to crime busting, and build boomilevers, elastic launch gliders and mousetrap vehicles that will out muscle and out fly the best of them!
Students will compete in a wide variety of STEM events, requiring them to research, collaborate, build, and test structures, vehicles, and prepare study packets needed for Science Olympiad.
Team members will need to use their knowledge of various scientific theories, basic engineering, data collection, and organizational skills to compete against their local peers at the first levels of competition. With proper tools and materials, students have the opportunity to fully explore areas they might not otherwise have access to.
