We have awesome students! They are sweet, generous, and kind to each other. We truly feel blessed to be their teachers. However, many come from homes with little in the way of resources. It saddens us that some of our brightest and best students come from homes with the least. Almost half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Some don't have winter coats. Others have holes in their shoes. As teachers, we do all we can to meet their needs. (Teaching can be a nonprofit job--according to my husband.)
What difference does it make?
What difference does it make to be told you matter? The most damaging messages of poverty tell children that they aren't valuable, they aren't important, that they don't matter. Put yourself in their shoes.
My Project
These STEM kits and materials will help our students think like inventors, scientists, and engineers. Many of our students do not have access to or experience with science-based toys and games.
Build, create, invent, explore--you can make it possible for our students to do all of these and more!
These STEM kits will be checked out by teachers to be used over and over again by multiple grade levels and across multiple years.
Don't we need our students to be able to analyze and think critically? They also need to build resilience, strengthen focus, and improve their task commitment. How can they do that if they never have experience doing hard things?
