Remember your first road trip? Many of my students have not been outside of their community, let alone the state. Why not let them go along for the ride with another child in another part of the country and era in time?
I teach at a small school in an urban community.
The school is a Title I school that is primarily African American. My students are enthusiastic learners and enjoy coming to school. I have English Language Learners, and my students are on various levels when it comes to reading. Some will be able to read the book independently while I will have to read with others prior to our discussions.
My Project
My students will use the books to read about the travels and trials of a family on a road trip from Ohio to Mississippi in their brand new gold Cadillac in 1950. They will read about the events and experiences that the family goes through on their trip. Students will learn what life was like for African-Americans in the South and how the color of your skin impacted the way people viewed and treated you. Through this book they will examine the characters, setting, and mood of the events in the story.
As our school district shifts to the Common Core State Standards, TIME for Kids will help build literacy through current events. Students will receive monthly newsletters as well as be engaged with online resources.
Donations to this projection will improve my classroom by providing culturally relevant literature for students to read.
In addition, they will also be exposed to current events while increasing their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills which are important skills needed as they progress through their educational journey and continue as lifelong learners.
