Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Cookie Mining is a valued activity in my AP Environmental Science Class. From this, they learn about types of mining, material cost, environmental impacts, economic cost, and environmental reclamation.

Students will use the different types of cookies as mining sites to mine for sweet ore.

They will have to budget the type of mine site being used and the cost of mining supplies. Students will wear their hard hats for safety, and purchase either a paper clip or toothpicks to use as their mining supplies. They are going to mine the chocolate chip ore. Once done mining, they mark on a topography map how their mining operation has affected local wildlife, streams, and land make-up.

They then must calculate the cost of start-up, their ore profits, and the cost of environmental reclamation once finished mining.

When looking at reclamation, students will construct a mine site in moon sand and tubs to determine what needs to be done to bring the land back to its near original state.
