I work in a title one school in Sunset Park Brooklyn. My class is comprised of 18 first graders who are learning English as they learn the first grade curriculum. They learn to communicate quickly. The children are sponges soaking up the English language along with phrases, jokes and expressions. The more they have to say the quicker the language seems to flow. I find that during arts and crafts the children seem most comfortable. They are so engaged in creating that they lose their inhibitions. As each person is involved in their own unique creation, the language generated is novel and functional. They learn to request materials from one another. They learn to be detailed naming materials by color, shape, size or texture. In our classroom we have a junk box which is comprised of all sorts of art materials. Choice time is a time of amazing creations as well as endless chatter. Sometimes they build little wooden furniture, sometimes they paint and other times they bend and twist pipe cleaners into odd little animals. No matter the creation the results is the same there is so much to talk about. The creations and language are only limited by the exhausted supplies. I would like some arts and crafts materials from oriental.com and lakeshore to replenish our treasured junk box.
