Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our youngest ESL students lack the basic skills and phonemic awareness to build their reading and writing skills in 1st and 2nd grade. Fortunately, they are entitled to one period a day of intense targeted instruction in the skills needed to succeed in their classroom. Our project will supply 12 students with the tools they need to learn to write at the just right level.

These primary notebooks and crayons will be perfect for our youngest students to begin to express themselves in pictures and writing so they can feel successful and build their confidence.

Each day, our small group is pulled out of class to review an early literacy skill and vocabulary together and then use the skills by writing in their very own journal. These journals have a nice big space for creating a picture to represent the words, which for some children is the only way to communicate as they are just learning English. Journal writing can be customized to allow each student to feel successful and express themselves in a creative and meaningful way.

Each child having their own primary notebook and set of crayons gives our students the feeling of pride as they complete more and more of the pages. During this period of the day, they will feel confident and capable because the skills presented are geared toward their needs, such as letter and sound recognition, handwriting, learning sight words, and eventually writing simple words and sentences on their own.

Every child needs a foundation to build on, and our ESL students are no exception. With targeted practice and plenty of individualized attention, they will be able to catch up and move on to more advanced skills, but this starts with the basics and a step-by-step approach.
