My Students
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -- Benjamin Franklin,
My students learn best through their interactions with one another. This year, they will be encouraged to be actively involved to share ideas and be comfortable working in pairs and small groups.
My students are enthusiastic and active 5th graders who are excited for their final year in elementary school.
They are bursting with energy to have a strong year and are highly motivated to learn. Their positive attitude enables them to be hard workers and well behaved. My class is made up of 35% English Language Learners, which has me using various teaching methods to help them learn the English language along with the other 5th grade standards, including the Common Core. I also have students with learning disabilities and I departmentalize with a colleague, thus teaching two sets of classes. Being at a Title I school, we are limited to various supplies and classroom furniture. In spite of all that, my students continue to learn and thrive by overcoming these challenges and doing their best with what they have. This year, I am looking to further engage my students by having them join together on a rug for various mini-lessons, discussions, and activities.
My Project
I believe all my students, including my English Language Learners and those with visual and learning disabilities, will benefit from having a classroom rug. With my students gathered together in close proximity to me for our writing mini-lessons and engaging discussions, this will allow students to be more focused, near their partner for partner-talk, and have the ability to participate in meaningful discussions. Many of my students are big in size and small in size, which makes it uncomfortable and hard for them to be attentive during lessons while sitting at their desks. Having them get up and move to a rug or new seating area will refresh their minds and bodies. This transition period is crucial to get them out of the funk they get when sitting at their desks for too long, which could potentially lead to behavior problems. My mobile anchor chart easel would be used during this time in which the students and myself would create anchor charts to use as reference for writing and math.
This donation will positively impact my students' lives.
This will give them the opportunity to sit closer together on a comfortable rug and encourage them to be attentive and engaged in the lesson. All students will benefit from the rug, including my English Language Learners, those with visual impairments, and students with learning disabilities, allowing them to be closer to me to hear, having a clearer view of charts, participating in partner-talk, and eliminating most behavior problems.
