Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How can you draw a picture with a broken pencil? I see each of my classes 1-2 times a week in a rotating schedule for 45 minutes. Since I see about 350 students a week. Our old, metal, wall mounted pencil sharpener has seen better days.
Can you help us sharpen our pencils and our drawing skills??
I teach at a K-6 elementary school in an inner city. Our supply budget is limited and when I order supplies for the entire school, I often need to leave vital things off of my list due to lack of funds. In my classroom I currently have an old fashion metal wall mounted pencil sharpener screwed to the wall. My students turn and grind and create piles of pencil shavings to no avail. Valuable art time is wasted- time where they could be creating sensational works of art. These old sharpeners don't sharpen, but eat up the pencils and leave the students with a short nub. Sketching, planning and drawing are always the first step to any good project. These all require sharp pencils and sharp minds. Colored pencils and watercolor pencils help my students bring their art to life. Without good sharpeners, we loose precious art time as well as art materials.
My Project
With these sharpeners the projects that we can create are endless. One project in particular is called Pinwheels for Peace. Every student in the school grades K-6 will use pencils and colored pencils to create original pinwheels decorated with signs and symbols of peace. These pin wheels will be displayed on our schools front lawn on September 21st- the National Day of Peace. This display will show our schools fight for peace and harmony in our school as well as in the world.
This project will help our students understand tolerance and peace.
It links to our schools "Bully Free Zone" policy by educating the students on the importance of a peaceful class, school and community.
