My students need 24 drumsticks and 14 tambourines to help create mini drum sets for our jam sessions, and 2 Tubanos to add world music drumming to our classes.

My Students

My students are experiencing having music class for the first time since the school has not had the funding for it for the past six years. My goal is to have my students become lifelong lovers of music and be able to appreciate music for years to come.

I see 350 kindergarten through fifth grade students at my school.

This is a neighborhood school and 100% of the students receive free and reduced price breakfast and lunch. Since the school is so small, they have not had music class in six years. When I started this year, I started with very little supplies. My students are very eager to learn and experience music in new ways. I am excited about the opportunities I can give them to broaden their musical horizons, and provide them with a lifelong love of music!

My Project

I have requested drumsticks, tambourines and Tubanos to add world music drumming to our classes. The tambourines and drumsticks will be added to some small cutting board "drum pads" and tin can "bass drums" to make small drum sets for each student. Not only will we be able to play already made routines with various pieces of music, but students can use these instruments to improvise and come up with their own drum beats. The creative outlet of these "found sound" instruments will be great for my students because they love the ability to be independent and come up with their own ideas. The Tubano drums are great instruments to give students the opportunity to work as a group with circle drumming activities. I would love to add these two drums to the growing collection at my school.

I am trying to find creative ways to get my students engaged in music and to help them understand that music is all around us. My students are very musical, and these additions to our music room repertoire will help bring their inner rhythm to the surface.
