My Students

For kindergrtners to become readers, writers and learners, they need to become SINGERS first! To be a singer, you have to get the rhythm. So...help me get the rhythm in our (their) HANDS!

We are a mid size K-5 public school in the SF Bay Area.

I have 26 eager kindergrtners who are always busy doing something! My population covers all continents and at least a dozen languages. Every minute and every second of our kindergarten day is a teachable and MUSICAL moment!

My Project

From the get go, I tell parents that in order to be READERS, their children need to have a love of LANGUAGE. To instill this love of language, I believe children must have language in their eyes, ears, mouths, bodies, hearts and brains. Only then can they begin the road to reading. In order to accomplish this, poems, music, rhymes, rhythms and chants play a BIG part in our Kindergarten day. What better way to love language than to PLAY with it? These 2 sets of egg shakers and 99 kazoos will help us to hear the rhythm as well as manipulate the rhythm that one hears in a song, a poem and later on in a good book!

I am not a singer!

Many of my students don't think they are singers either. Together, we play with music and language all day long and create a symphony of words in my classroom. Help us to create the orchestra to accompany us!
