My Students

We are an Upper Autism class between the ages of 7 and 9. Our students are energetic and full of a want to thrive. Each child comes to school with such a positive attitude despite their needs. Some days are tough and that's what makes us learn and grow. As a whole, we are learning that hard work pays off and that we are each special in our own way.

A quote in our classroom is "Why fit in, when you were born to stand out" by Dr Seuss.

This is a reminder that though our abilities might be different than others, we are proud to be ourselves. Each student in our classroom has a different need. Some of us need extra time to finish our work. Others need simpler instructions. Some of us are visual learners and others are auditory learners. We are all learning to understand our emotions.I am teaching them, but they are also teaching me. I am so proud of the kind of human beings they've become. They are kind and so helpful all the time. All in all, we are all so proud of what we are accomplishing.

My Project

In a world ruled by technology, students in South Central L.A. don't have access to the same resources as others. General education classes have limited amounts of technology and for Special Education classes - which is what I teach- they're almost non-existent. By using technology in my classroom I can prepare my students for future careers. I definitely have some students who are more engaged when technology is used. This will also help me connect to students with different learning styles.

I want to share my technological enthusiasm with my students so they can become tech savvy.

Having tablets in my classroom will allow them to navigate applications such as Starfall and Raz Kids. These applications focus on reading fluency and comprehension. Currently, my entire classroom shares two PC's. I have been blessed to have a class that is able to rotate and share these two computers during free choice rotations. However, I would love to be able to have more current technology that they can take to The Reading Corner where they can sit on their bean bags, relax, and enjoy some reading practice. I would like to expose them to tablet use as opposed to just PC use.

I hope that by embracing and integrating some technology in my classroom my students will develop technological skills necessary and will set them up for future successes.
