Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have a class of twelve wonderful hard-working 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders who receive special education services and that LOVE to work on the computer. Our school is in a high-need community in New York.

My students are just beginning to read, write, tell time, and add. It is a very exciting time for them as they discover so many new ideas and skills. Our biggest dilemma is that we have only one old small computer. There are so many opportunities for my students to develop these new writing and math skills on educational websites and with educational software, but 12 students and one computer just doesn't add up.

Two computers are better than one! I have created a schedule for my students that will have them working in pairs and rotating between centers, such as adding, writing, and reading. It would be perfect to have two computers so that two students could each work on math, language arts, or science at our computer center, instead of having to take turns at our old eMac.

Another great opportunity that a new iMac would bring to the classroom is its presentation-sized monitor. Because we have no TV or projector, the computer is the only way that I can show my students any media presentation, such as Google Earth to show the scale of our neighborhood in New York, or online programs that teach them how to type; the possibilities are endless.
