Fifth grade is time when students are becoming more independent and starting to find out who they really are. We are in a small K-8 school and most of these students have been together since Kindergarten, so many strong bonds have been built between these students. We have a lot of strong personalities in our classroom, and students are given the ability to express themselves on many occasions.
We are a culturally diverse bunch, and we are very accepting of each other's differences.
We welcome diversity and often times ask questions to find out more information about each other. Every student in this classroom has their own story to tell because they all come from such different backgrounds. My students face daily challenges with a positive attitude and a smile on their face!
My Project
In addition to the curriculum, our class as a whole learns how to handle their negative emotions in a more positive and healthy way. To promote a healthy way of expressing their emotions, I want to create a Calm Corner in my classroom where students can take a break and regulate their emotions.
For students to learn to the best of their ability, they need emotional self-regulation.
Teachers can teach emotional self-regulation just like any other skill, whether it be academic or social. It is going to take time for students to learn to process their emotions and be able to calm themselves down but this safe space will allow them to take the time they need to deal with the emotion at hand.
In my Calm Corner, I would like my students to use all 5 senses. I would to incorporate a cozy bean bag chair for my students to sit on which is more comfortable than the plastic chairs they sit on all day. I would use the sand tools for the kinetic sand that I already have in my classroom. The peppermints on my list will be used for my students who need help refocusing. The essential oils will be used for my students sense of smell to help calm them down and regain their focus. The privacy divider will be used so that the student that is in the Calm Corner will not feel like all other classmates are looking at him or her. I know my students will benefit from brain break in the Calm Corner!
