Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are in south Texas at a public elementary school of about 850 students PK-5. We are located in a coastal town, which has chemical plants and fishing industries. We have many migrant families due to lots of agriculture in our area, and contract work at the plants.
Over 70% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
As a result, many of them have had no exposure to a variety of life experiences, which would increase their knowledge. When Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on our town, many students suffered and to this day some families are still recovering.
Our community includes a diverse group of cultures. We have Burmese refugee children, other Asian children whose parents work at the plants, African American, Hispanic and white students.
The students are very eager to learn and, for the most part, the parents want what is best for their child, no matter what. They may have limited income but they still try to help do whatever they can for their children. These students may be low income - but are eager learners who deserve the best education I can give them.
My Project
I believe flexible seating is the future for prime learning. There is nothing like walking into a classroom and seeing students "all over." Some are collaborating - some are working independently.
Giving students choices in their seating also gives them autonomy and ownership in the classroom.
Flexible seating lends itself to differentiation.
I think in this day and age it is important to give students the optimal environment for learning and I believe flexible seating is one avenue to make this happen. I try to differentiate for my students and meet each ones' special learning needs from struggling learner to gifted and talented.
