We are in South Texas at a public elementary school of about 850 students PK-5. We are located in a coastal town, which has chemical plants and fishing industries. We have many migrant families due to lots of agriculture in our area. Our students are over 70% free and reduced lunch, so many of them have had no exposure to a variety of life experiences, which would increase their knowledge. Our community includes a diverse group of cultures. We have Burmese refugee children, other Asian children, whose parents work at the plants, African American, Hispanic and White students. The students are very eager to learn and, for the most part, the parents want what is best for their child - no matter what. They may have limited income but they still try to help do whatever they can to help their children. The students LOVE books and Big Books are an enriching learning experience for them.
