Actively engaging students in problem-solving and communicating their thinking increases their motivation and learning. My students need large whiteboards to share their thinking and problem solving methods with classmates.
My students attend a large urban middle school and come from very diverse backgrounds.
Close to two-thirds of my students are economically disadvantaged, and a quarter have limited English proficiency. In addition, our school is fully integrated. Our incoming sixth-grade class has a large number of students with Individual Education Plans (IEP). Despite the fact that some of the student achievement indicators for my school are below the state average, the amount of growth our students are making each year is above the state average in math, putting them on track to catch up with their peers. This is because these students want to learn and the staff here puts significant effort into ensuring that they do learn.
My Project
This school year, I will work with over 150 sixth graders, using a newly adopted math curriculum. As citizens in today's world, math knowledge and problem solving is crucial to success. It is also important for students to have a variety of skills such as persevering, critiquing others arguments, and effectively communicating. The whiteboards I am asking for are needed for students to share their thinking with each other. I will be co-teaching in a large space and these whiteboards will provide mobile areas for students to share their thinking and problem solving methods. Providing an avenue for students to share different methods for solving problems will increase engagement and communication in all of my math classes.
My students need whiteboards to show their thinking while solving problems in our new math curriculum.
The new curriculum is designed to provide all students with soft skills, including problem-solving and communicating thinking, as well as a college preparatory math experience. It is my goal to provide my students with the math experience designed by this curriculum.
